Scotland: A 77-year-old man with a terminal illness wins more than a million euros in the lottery

Ian Anderson and his wife Marlyn, who suffer from pulmonary fibrosis, now want to purchase new accommodation to ensure her husband has a more comfortable end of life.

A victory with a bitter taste. A Scottish couple in their seventies, Ian and Marlyn Anderson, recently won the top prize, just over one million euros, from the British National Lottery.

However, Ian, 77, suffers from a lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, which has reached a terminal stage and is now incurable. According to the BBC, Ian’s former job in construction could be the cause of this illness.

Although the couple declined numerous interviews, they spoke with the National Lottery, organizer of the draw. When it came time to play, Marlyn assures, the couple, married for 32 years and not in gold, only had 4.90 pounds, or just over 5 euros.

“We found out the next morning, we opened the iPad, he pointed to something and said: ‘look at this’. I thought we had won £1,000, he said: ‘no, look carefully’, so I counted the zeros. and that’s it I couldn’t feel my legs,” he recalls.

“You can’t buy your health”

The couple, who have two children, five grandchildren and one great-grandson, have already invested in a new car, a Citroën DS7. But, above all, they both want to invest in a new, better-adapted house, to facilitate the end of Ian’s life.

For several months, the latter, permanently on respiratory assistance, has not been able to go up to the first floor of his current home. In fact, now they want to buy a bungalow.

“Everything on one floor, it will be much easier for Ian, it is incredible, the time he has left will be much more useful, whatever the house is, it will allow him to have a more or less normal life.” she explains.

Before Ian’s disastrous diagnosis, Marlyn assures him, the couple had already “lived their lives to the fullest.” “Winning the lottery can buy you things you couldn’t afford, but it can’t buy your health,” she concludes philosophically.
