Dietrich Mateschitz, co-founder of the Red Bull empire, has passed away

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, a giant in the world of energy drinks and the founder of the Formula 1 team, died on Saturday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness.

Red Bull expressed its “sadness” at the death of the Austrian millionaire and his “gratitude for all he has achieved”.

Mateschitz launched an energy drink with a Thai partner in the 1980s, inspired by the drinks taxi drivers in the country use to stay awake all day. An alliance that led to a huge empire, also known for sports betting, from the Formula 1 team, or the football clubs RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg, to more radical ones.

Red Bull team manager Christian Horner described Mateschitz as a passionate supporter and “the backbone of everything we do”. In his tribute, he spoke of a sad day, saying that Mateschitz was “a great man, one of the few of his kind, for what he has achieved and done for many people around the world and in many sports”.
