A fighter jet crashed into a house in Irkutsk, Siberia, on Sunday, local authorities said. Two pilots were killed, Irkutsk region governor Igor Kobzev said.
“A Su-type aircraft fell on a two-story house in Irkutsk,” the local official wrote on Telegram. The Su-30 plane crashed “during a training flight,” causing a fire, he said. “Both pilots were killed,” Igor Kobzev said, adding that “none of the local residents were injured.”
According to the local office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the aircraft crashed into a two-story wooden private house, causing a fire in an area of 200 square meters.
An open investigation
At least a dozen firefighters poured water on the house partially destroyed by the flames to control the fire, according to a video posted on Telegram by Igor Kobzev.
“Fortunately, there was no one in the house” at the time of the incident, greeted the local delegation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
For its part, the Russian Investigative Committee, in charge of the main investigations in the country, announced the opening of an investigation for “violation of air transport safety and operation regulations.”
This is the second such accident in a week in Russia. On Monday, 15 people, including three children, lost their lives after the crash of a Russian Su-34 military plane in the city of Yeisk, near Ukraine. The aircraft crashed during a training flight, sparking a fire in a nine-story building housing some 600 residents.
