At least 12 houses collapsed in a populous neighborhood of Caracas, due to torrential rains that affected the capital of Venezuela, on Monday afternoon (night in Lisbon).
According to local radio stations, houses collapsed in the La Ladera sector of the 23 de Enero commune, Libertador Municipality, affecting more than 160 families.
In statements to state television, the Vice President of Citizen Security, Remígio Ceballos, said that another 60 houses at risk of collapse due to the effect of the rains on the land were also identified.
In Caracas, authorities monitor the water level of the Guaire River that runs through the city.
South of Caracas, in Carrizal, Los Altos Mirandinos, heavy rains overflowed two streams, dragging at least two dozen parked vehicles.
Several users on the social network Twitter published videos, in which you can see the moment in which some people climb on the roof and try to get out of their vehicles before being swept away by the water.
The videos show the moment when the back of a major pharmacy and one of the main streets of San Antonio are flooded with water that reaches the windows of the vehicles.
José Morales, mayor of Carrizal, explained to journalists that one person was injured.
In contrast, in Maracay (100 kilometers west of Caracas), the intense rains that have caused flooding in El Castaño have resumed, where a river overflowed its banks last week, killing four people.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Venezuela, “rains of variable intensity” and electrical storms are expected in the next few hours.
This situation must be registered in at least 12 of the 24 regions of the country, mainly affecting the states of Zúlia, Trujillo, Mérida, Táchira, Apure, Aragua, Capital District, La Guaira, Miranda, Guárico, Anzoátegui and Bolívar.
