German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in kyiv on Tuesday for a surprise visit to Ukraine, his spokesman told Agence France-Presse (AFP) news.
“I am looking forward to my meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, in kyiv, and with the people of the north of the country, where I want to get an idea of their life in times of war,” he said, quoted in a note sent by the spokeswoman.
Before meeting with Zelensky, Steinmeier will visit the small town of Korjukiwa (in the north of the country, near the border with Belarus), which had been occupied by Russian troops.
The city, now liberated, faces the cold, as its infrastructure has been destroyed. The German president will offer help to the city to restore the energy infrastructure.
“My message to the Ukrainians: you can count on Germany! We will continue to support Ukraine: militarily, politically, financially and humanitarianly,” he stressed.
