Italy’s new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, leader of the post-fascist Fratelli party, on Tuesday categorically denied any “sympathy” or “closeness” to fascism.
“I have never had sympathy or closeness to anti-democratic regimes. For any regime, including fascism”, he said during his general policy speech before the Chamber of Deputies.
While fears overcame the European chancelleries before the announcement of his victory, Giorgia Meloni also wanted to reassure his partners. Italy is “fully part of Europe and the Western world,” she asserted forcefully.
He assured that the Italian approach was not “to hinder and sabotage European integration” but rather to make the community machine work better, in his general policy speech before the deputies who must vote in the afternoon for confidence in his government, a vote won because of the absolute majority that your coalition has.
“Stop illegal departures” from Africa
However, the new Italian leader has not abandoned the various issues that have marked her electoral campaign, such as the fight against immigration. Giorgia Meloni thus assured the deputies that her government intends to “stop illegal departures” from Africa to the peninsula.
“This government wants to stop illegal departures (from Africa) and end human trafficking” in the Mediterranean, he said.
