Britain’s new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, decided on Tuesday to keep the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, who was appointed in mid-October, to calm the financial turmoil caused by the economic program of the previous head of government, Liz Truss.
A seasoned politician with experience heading the Health and Foreign Affairs portfolios, Hunt, 55, canceled nearly all of the tax cuts announced by the Truss administration just days after taking office.
The minister also reneged on a pledge not to cut government spending and anticipated “many tough decisions” to save billions of pounds, raising fears of a return to austerity policies.
On October 31, Hunt will present a medium-term budget plan in parliament.
Hunt was a losing candidate in 2019 and 2022 in the race to succeed Theresa May and Boris Johnson as leader and prime minister of the Conservative Party, but decided not to run in these latest elections in favor of Rishi Sunak.

In a speech outside the official residence in Downing Street, Sunak, after being nominated by King Charles III, assumed that some mistakes had been made” and that he was chosen “in part to correct them”.
Sunak pledged to “put economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda” and that he warned “will make tough decisions”.
The new prime minister began forming a new government this Tuesday, having already appointed Dominic Raab as justice minister and deputy prime minister, a position he held under Boris Johnson until he was fired by Liz Truss.

Rishi Sunak is Britain’s third Prime Minister since the start of the year and the fifth to hold the post in six years.
A descendant of Indian immigrants, he is also the first leader of Indian descent in British history and the first practitioner of the Hindu religion.
Sunak, 42, is still the youngest British leader in over 200 years, one year younger than David Cameron in 2010 and Tony Blair in 1997.
He was elected leader of the Conservative Party after becoming the only candidate to receive the required 100 support from fellow MPs.
