China says it is closer than ever to achieving reunification with Taiwan

China “is closer than ever” to achieving “full reunification” with Taiwan, Chinese officials said on Wednesday, days after leader Xi Jinping won a third five-year term.

“We are closer than ever in our history and more confident and capable of achieving national rejuvenation and complete reunification of the motherland,” said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese State Council in Beijing. response to questions about Xi’s remarks on Taiwan at the opening of the 20th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“The wheels of history are turning towards the reunification of China,” Xi said, assuring that the reunification “will come to fruition.”

The CCP elected this weekend the new composition of the Central Committee and the Politburo Standing Committee, keeping Xi as secretary general of the organization.

China’s current leader emerged during his first decade in power as one of the strongest leaders in China’s modern history, almost comparable to Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic, who led the country from 1949 to 1976.

China and Taiwan have lived as two autonomous territories since 1949, when the former Chinese nationalist government took refuge on the island after defeat in the civil war against the communists. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and threatens reunification by force if the island formally declares its independence.
