Ukraine: Last reactor at Zaporijia nuclear power plant shuts down

The last reactor in operation at Ukraine’s Zaporijia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe and occupied by Russian troops, was disconnected from the grid on Monday, Ukrainian state operator Energoatom said.

‘Reactor number six has been shut down and disconnected from the grid’said Energoatom on the social network Telegram, about a fire “which took place as a result of a bombing” and damaged a power line connecting this plant to the Ukrainian grid.

This reactor was the only one working of the six units of this plant.

On Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose experts are on site, had already announced the closure of reactor number five, also because of damage to a power line after a bombing.

The other four reactors in Zaporijia have been shut down for several weeks.

The latest incident follows a Friday visit by an IAEA delegation to the factory, which is a source of contention between Kiev and Moscow and whose site was bombed several times, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.

For several weeks, Russians and Ukrainians blamed each other for these bombings.

With six reactors of 1,000 megawatts each, this plant fell to Russian troops in March, shortly after the start of the invasion of Ukraine.
