The Spanish government has accepted a new Russian ambassador to the country on Wednesday to keep diplomatic channels open with Moscow, sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed to the Europa Press news agency.
The new diplomat will thus replace Yuri Korchagin, who is leaving Madrid after 10 years in office.
The same sources explained that the Executive granted the vacancy to the Russian ambassador, because, as they justified, “it is a way of keeping diplomatic channels open”, for which the Government defends “the return of peace” after the Russian invasion of Ukraine .
“If the peace that we all want comes, it will be through diplomatic channels. Spain will not cut any bridge to stop this war”, they have underlined from the Palacio de la Moncloa, official residence of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.
For their part, sources from the Russian Embassy in Madrid assured Europa Press that they had not yet received the “official notification” from the Government.
Until now, the Russian ambassador in Madrid, Yuri Korchagin, had been summoned by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 3, in a form of protest against the annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Moscow.
The call was made in coordination with other European partners, who had already summoned Russian ambassadors to convey the same message.
