Syria on Thursday accused Israel of carrying out a new missile attack on Damascus, the second such in the past three days and the third in less than a week, the SANA news agency reported.
“The Israeli enemy carried out missile aggression fired from the direction of the occupied Palestinian territories against some points on the outskirts of the city of Damascus,” an unnamed military source told SANA.
The same source indicated that the anti-aircraft defenses of the Arab country managed to shoot down most of the projectiles, so the action only caused material damage.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based non-governmental organization, confirmed the attack in a statement, saying some of the missiles struck near Damascus International Airport.
This is the 28th Israeli action in the Arab nation this year, according to the Observatory. The latest took place on Monday in Rif Damascus province, on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, where Israeli shells wounded a soldier, three days after a similar attack in that administrative district.
Israel frequently attacks the neighboring country and says the presence of Iranian and Lebanese armed groups allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad poses a threat to its security.
