Three Pakistani firefighters were killed in a crane accident in Qatar on Wednesday, less than a month before the World Cup, authorities said.
According to the same source, the three men did not participate in the vast Watan security exercise, which took place between Sunday and Thursday and serves as preparation for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which takes place between November 20 and on December 18.
The authorities did not give details about the accident, but testimonies from friends of the victims published on social networks indicate that the firefighters were hit by a crane that fell in the port of Hamad.
The Watan exercise brought together security forces from 15 countries, involved fighter jets and simulated a chemical attack on a stadium and several demonstrations by supporters outside the stadium.
The World Cup security operations committee assured, on Twitter, that the exercise demonstrated “the capacity, preparation and determination of the military and civilian forces to face all scenarios.”
