Vladimir Putin criticizes Emmanuel Macron for having made their telephone exchanges public

The Elysee had authorized television cameras to film a high-level exchange between the two leaders last February, a few days before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin had very little taste for Emmanuel Macron’s initiative. This Thursday, after his speech at the Valdai discussion forum in Moscow, the Russian leader sharply criticized his French counterpart for making their telephone exchanges public earlier in the year, he reports. The Guardian.

Last July, the Elysee authorized television cameras to film a very high-level exchange between Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin, in particular a telephone call between the two heads of state four days before the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine. The exchange had been broadcast as part of a France 2 documentary.

Vladimir Putin is not the first Russian official to complain about this broadcast. A few days after this, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recalled that “diplomatic etiquette does not provide for unilateral leaks of (such) recordings.”

He also judged that Russia had no reason to be ashamed of the content of the conversation between the two leaders.

“We always conduct negotiations in such a way that we never have to be embarrassed. We always say what we think, we are ready to vouch for our words and explain our position,” he said.
