Russian parliament approves tightening law against ‘LGBT propaganda’

Russian lawmakers on Thursday generally approved amendments to the law promoting “non-traditional” sexual relations, tightening the crackdown on so-called “LGBT propaganda”, referring to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The law, passed in 2013, penalizes “LGBT propaganda” among minors and now also prohibits the “denial of family values” and the “promotion of non-traditional sexual orientations” among adults.

The new bans prevent “the media, the Internet, literature, film” and even advertising from promoting “non-traditional sex,” and movies that do “will not receive a distribution certificate,” he warns.

The text also prohibits “information that may induce a desire to change sex” in children.

According to information published on the website of the Russian parliament, the deputies “unanimously approved the amendments to the legislation banning the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations”.

The legislation will go through two more votes before the upper house of the Federal Assembly of Russia, namely the Federation Council (the lower house is called the State Duma), approves the amended law and submits it to the president, Vladimir Putin, for signature, which is usually a simple formality .

“We must protect our citizens and Russia from degradation and extinction, from the darkness that is spreading over the United States and European states,” State Duma President Vyacheslav Volodin said in a statement.

The violations in question are punishable by heavy fines and foreigners who violate this law can be deported, the parliament says on its website.

In recent years, Russia has strengthened its more conservative wing in response to what Vladimir Putin presents as the decadence of Western society.

This strengthening of conservatism was reinforced after the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, which was presented by the Russian presidency (Kremlin) as yet another struggle against the Western world, which, according to Moscow, was determined to wipe out Russia.

“The Special Military Operation” [na Ucrânia] It is happening not only on the battlefield, but also in people’s consciousness, in their heads and in their souls,” MEP Alexander Khinchtein defended in a statement published on the Telegram messaging network.

On the LGBT issue, Russia is in a “civilization conflict with the West,” the deputy concluded.
