At least nine people died and another 13 were injured on Saturday night in the accidental explosion of a tanker truck carrying gas in Baghdad, medical and security sources inform AFP.
“Nine civilians were killed and 13 wounded in the explosion” of the hydrocarbon transport vehicle, the commander of Baghdad’s security forces said in a statement. “The explosion is an accident and not an act of terrorism,” he said.
For its part, a medical source told AFP a balance of twelve dead.
The explosion took place in a parking lot.
The blast, which was heard across much of the Iraqi capital, occurred in a parking lot near a soccer field and an outdoor cafe in a residential area in eastern Baghdad.
According to an AFP photographer, the windows of nearby houses were shattered and many vehicles were damaged.
