Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised “fervent support” to the government of successor Liz Truss on Tuesday in his farewell speech outside his Downing Street residence at this “difficult time for the economy.”
Before leaving for Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where he will formally present his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II, Johnson spoke before dozens of aides, members of the Government and also before a multitude of photographic and television cameras.
“I will give this government nothing but the most fervent support. This is a tough time for the economy, for families across the country, but we can and will come out of this stronger,” he said.
To his fellow Conservatives, he said: “The time for politics is over and it’s time to support the Liz Truss team and program and help the people of this country, because that’s what the people want.”
“On the subject of leaps into future careers, let me say that I am now like one of those rocket boosters that has done its job. I will now gently re-enter the atmosphere and plunge invisibly into a remote, dark corner of the Pacific.” . ,” he said.
The British leader, who announced his intention to resign two months ago, will meet the queen this morning.
Truss, who was appointed leader of the ruling Conservative Party on Monday, will be named prime minister during another audience with the Queen shortly after.
On his return to London, he will also deliver a speech in Downing Street at 4pm before starting to form a new government.
