Joe Biden believes his record “deserved a second term” but he had to resign to “unite” his party

During a ten-minute speech, the American president explained the reasons for his withdrawal from the presidential election in November.

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he had decided not to run for a second term because he needed to “unite” the Democratic Party before the presidential election scheduled for November against Donald Trump.

“In recent weeks, it has become clear to me that I must unite my party in this crucial task,” he said in a solemn speech, adding that “the time has come” for “new voices (…) younger voices.”

Save “democracy”

According to the US president, the 2024 presidential election is a fight to save “democracy”, which is why he has withdrawn from the race for the White House.

“I believe that my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for the future of America, all of this deserved a second term,” he said in particular, “but nothing, nothing can stand in the way of saving our democracy, including personal ambition.”

After Joe Biden’s withdrawal, can Democrats still win the US presidential election?

He continued: “So I decided that the best way forward was to pass the torch to a new generation. This is the best way to unify our nation.”
