The number of victims continues to rise after the deadly stampede in the streets of Seoul (South Korea), which killed at least 153 people on the sidelines of the Halloween party. A French citizen has been identified among the victims, the Quai d’Orsay tells BFMTV. Two other Frenchmen were injured but left the hospital, the same source said.
The French Embassy in South Korea has recommended that French citizens currently there “contact their relatives as soon as possible to reassure them”.
“France is by your side”
Saturday night turned into a nightmare in Itaewon, a district of Seoul located near a former US military base and known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its bars and all kinds of party venues in a maze of narrow alleys.
Some 100,000 people, according to media estimates, attended the Halloween party, the first in Seoul since the start of the covid-19 pandemic.
Emmanuel Macron expressed “a moving thought for the people of Seoul and for the entire Korean people” on Saturday night. “France is by your side,” added the Head of State on Twitter, while Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne expressed her “very strong emotion.”
