Russia accuses UK of ‘terrorist act’ against Nord Stream pipelines

The Russian military accused the United Kingdom on Saturday of being involved in the explosions that caused leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines built in the Baltic Sea in September to transport Russian gas to central Europe.

Russia has repeatedly complained that it was not involved in the international investigation into the Nord Stream leaks and explosions, which followed alleged sabotage.

The Swedish justice system announced on Friday that it intends to carry out a new inspection of the gas pipelines, as well as the Nord Stream consortium, which sent a civilian ship under the Russian flag.

On September 26, four major leaks were discovered in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines on the Danish island of Bornholm, two in the Swedish economic zone and two in Denmark.

Preliminary underwater inspections reinforced the suspicion of sabotage, as the leaks were preceded by explosions.

Since the conflict in Ukraine on Feb. 24, the two gas pipelines connecting Russia to Germany have been at the center of geopolitical tensions sparked by Moscow’s decision to cut gas supplies to Europe in retaliation for Western sanctions.

Out of service, however, they contained gas when damaged.

Two of the four leaks discovered in gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, in international waters, are in the Danish exclusive economic zone, the other two in the Swedish zone.

The investigations conducted so far by the authorities of the two states have confirmed that the damage was caused by strong explosions, reinforcing the hypothesis of acts of sabotage.
