The collapse of a suspension bridge this Sunday in India killed at least 35 people, according to the country’s media, cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP). According to local authorities, at the time of the collapse there were hundreds of people on Ponte de Morbi, in the state of Gujarat.
The Indian authorities have already confirmed the death of 35 people, continuing the rescue operations, according to the Minister of Housing and Rural Development of Gujarat, Brijesh Merja, quoted by the EFE agency.
The infrastructure, which dates back to the time of the British occupation of India, had been under construction for several months and had reopened to the public just four days ago.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a native of Gujarat, was visiting the region and has already announced that aid will be provided to those killed and injured as a result of the accident, calling for the “urgent mobilization of rescue teams.”
The Indian news agency PTI reports that several women and children were on the suspension bridge.
