Joe Biden congratulates Lula da Silva on the victory

US President Joe Biden congratulated Lula da Silva on Sunday for the presidency of Brazil, expressing his commitment to “continue cooperation” between the two countries.

“I send my congratulations to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for his election to be the next president of Brazil, after free, fair and credible elections,” said the US head of state, in a statement released tonight.

“I look forward to working together to continue the cooperation between our two countries in the coming months and years,” adds the President of the United States of America in the same note.

Around 11:00 p.m. in Lisbon, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (STE) considered the election mathematically defined. When 99.17% of the sections were counted, the candidate of the Workers’ Party (PT, left), Lula da Silva had 50.85% of the votes, against 49.15% for Jair Bolsonaro (extreme right ).

Lula da Silva, who has already served two terms as president, between 2003 and 2011, returns to the Planalto Palace after a second-round victory, the first in Brazil’s recent democratic history against a candidate for head of state.

The former trade unionist will have as vice president Geraldo Alckmin, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), who had already been his opponent in the 2006 presidential elections, then for the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
