The Russian president on Monday congratulated Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, winner of the presidential elections in Brazil, and defended the development of “constructive cooperation,” the Kremlin said.
“Please accept my sincere congratulations… The election results confirmed your great political authority. I hope that, by making joint efforts, we will ensure further development of Russian-Brazilian constructive cooperation in all areas,” he said. The candidate of the Workers’ Party (left) was elected President of Brazil, with 50.9%, defeating Jair Bolsonaro, who obtained 49.1%, after counting all the votes, according to the Superior Electoral Court ( TSE).
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 77, obtained more than 60.3 million votes (50.9% of the total), with an advantage of more than 2.1 million over Bolsonaro (extreme right), who obtained 58.2 million (49.1%), in the presidential elections on Sunday, indicated the TSE website.
Lula da Silva, who has already served two terms between 2003 and 2011, is now returning to the Planalto Palace.
The former trade unionist will have as vice president Geraldo Alckmin, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), who had already been his opponent in the 2006 presidential elections, then for the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB).
