The US embassy in South Africa warned on Wednesday of possible attacks in one of Johannesburg’s wealthiest suburbs next weekend, though it has not determined the method or target.
“The US government has received information that terrorists are planning to attack large concentrations of people on October 29, 2022 at an unspecified location in the Sandton area”according to the warning of the Embassy of the United States of America.
The embassy, which gave no further details, urged its employees to avoid crowds in the coming days.
A spokesman for the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contacted by Lusa, said the Internal Security Agency is monitoring the situation.
Johannesburg has suffered no major attacks in recent decades, although the country is under threat from the Islamic State terror group, which has warned of possible attacks in retaliation for South Africa’s involvement in counter-terrorism operations in northern Mozambique.
Martin Ewi, an African security expert at the UN Security Council, had already warned of the possibility that the African continent could be “the future of the caliphate” of the Islamic State.
The expert said the terrorist group has “increased its influence immeasurably” in Africa, with at least 20 countries directly feeling the extremist group’s activity and more than 20 others “used for logistics and to mobilize funds and other resources.”
