According to a revised toll (there were 60) quoted by the Times of India, at least 78 people were killed on Sunday when an ancient bridge collapsed in India. “More than 80 were rescued,” said Brijesh Merja, a minister in the Gujarat state government where the accident took place.
This nearly century-old bridge is pedestrianized and a place many locals use for picnics.
An official source said at least 150 people were on the bridge at the time of the collapse, according to The Times of India.
Other media spoke in the presence of more than 350 people on the bridge when it collapsed, according to AFP.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu mourned the tragedy on Twitter.
Built in the days of the British Empire, this bridge reopened to the public this week after months of renovation work.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation for the families of the dead and injured.
