Israel Elections: Benjamin Netanyahu Says He’s Ready to ‘Form a Government’

The former prime minister could return to power, while his party, Likud, won Tuesday’s Israeli legislative elections.

“We are close to a great victory,” former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday after parliamentary elections put his Likud party and its far-right and religious allies in line for a majority.

“I have experience, I have made some choices. We have to wait for the final results but our path, that of Likud, has proven to be the right one. We are close to a great victory,” said Benjamin. Netanyahu to his followers gathered in Jerusalem.

“We don’t know the results yet, but if the results are like tonight’s polls, I will form a national government for all the citizens of Israel,” added Benjamin Netanyahu, who has the longest experience as prime minister in the country’s history. .

Alliance with the extreme right

On trial for corruption in a series of cases, an issue he did not address in his Wednesday morning speech, Benjamin Netanyahu lost power last year to a motley coalition now led by the centrist Yair Lapid.

The projections of the Israeli channels attribute to Likud the first position in the legislative elections with thirty seats, ahead of Yaïr Lapid’s Yesh Atid party with some 24 seats.

The “Religious Zionism” formation of Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir would double its support with 14 deputies according to these polls, which also credit ultra-Orthodox parties with good performances.

With his allies from the religious and far-right parties, Benjain Netanyahu would win the majority, according to projections by Israeli channels. The electoral commission, for its part, only gave partial results.
