Now it’s official. Liz Truss was appointed British Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday during an audience at Scotland’s Balmoral Castle, the monarch’s office said.
Images released by the palace show the 96-year-old sovereign, leaning on a cane, shaking hands with the 47-year-old new ruler, who becomes the 15th head of government in his 70-year reign.

“The Queen received Elizabeth Truss MP in audience today and asked her to form a new government,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“Madame Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed her hands to mark her appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” it added, using the figurative expression that describes the ceremony.
Elizabeth II had received shortly before Boris Johnson who had submitted his resignation after just over three years in power.
