Liz Truss Candidate for British Prime Minister

Liz Truss was appointed Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Tuesday after meeting with Queen Elizabeth II, who asked her to form a new government after accepting the resignation of Boris Johnson.

In a photograph made public, the queen, leaning on a cane, greeted Truss, who became the 15th head of government in the 96-year-old monarch’s 70-year reign.

Boris Johnson left Balmoral Castle in Scotland minutes earlier, at around 12:00, where he arrived this morning with his wife, Carrie, to be received by the Queen.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said Johnson “handed in his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was pleased to accept.”

Liz Truss will now travel back to London to the official residence in Downing Street, where she will give a speech at 4pm and begin announcing the composition of the government.

The transition resulted from the internal election for the Conservative Party leadership that began in July, of which Truss was declared the winner on Monday with 57% of the vote.
