“Our dreams are more alive than ever”. Here’s how Jair Bolsonaro reacted to Sunday’s election, nearly 48 hours after the election results that dictated his defeat were announced.
Although he never congratulated Lula da Silva, the winner, in his brief statement, Jair Bolsonaro thanked the votes entrusted to him by “millions of people” and made it clear: “As a president and citizen, I will always keep the commandments of the Constitution.”
After Sunday’s elections, numerous protests erupted across the country. In response, Bolsonaro called for “peaceful, nonviolent demonstrations” other than the “methods of the left”. “The protests are the result of outrage at the way the electoral process has gone,” he said.
Recalling that during his tenure he lived through a pandemic and now the war in Ukraine, the Brazilian president said that he “unlike his opponents” always played “within the four democratic lines and the constitution”. “It is an honor to be the leader of millions of Brazilians,” he concluded without questioning the journalists present in Palácio da Alvorada.
In the aftermath, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) recognized the importance of the speech. “The Federal Supreme Court emphasizes the importance of the ruling of the President of the Republic to guarantee the right to come and go with regard to the blockades and, in determining the beginning of the transition, to recognize the final outcome of the elections “indicated the STF in a note.
Next step: power transfer
At the end of the statement, the Bolsonaro Civil House minister confirmed that the transition is now proceeding normally.
“President Jair Bolsonaro has authorized me. Based on the law, we will initiate the transition process when requestedsaid Ciro Nogueira in Palácio da Alvorada, after Jair Bolsonaro spoke.
“The PT chairman [Partido dos Trabalhadores]according to her on behalf of President Lula, said that: On Thursday, the name of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will be formalized. We will wait for this to be formalized to comply with the law of our country’ concluded Ciro Nogueira.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro broke the silence following the defeat on Sunday (October 30) election night, which dictated Lula da Silva’s victory. The PT candidate was again elected president of Brazil by a narrow margin, receiving 50.9% of the vote, against 49.1% for Jair Bolsonaro. The president-elect’s inauguration is scheduled for January 1, 2023.
As Lula da Silva was confirmed as the winner of Sunday’s election, a response from the defeated candidate was expected, but Bolsonaro remained silent after raising doubts during the campaign about alleged electoral fraud and the possibility of not accepting the results.
In fact, there is no indication that he congratulated Lula da Silva on his win, as is usually the case. At least on election night, he didn’t call the PT candidate. “Anywhere in the world, the defeated president would have already proclaimed and recognized victory,” Lula da Silva said during his victory speech on Sunday. “So far he hasn’t called or acknowledged defeat. I don’t know if he’s going to call or admit,” he added.
After Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat, protesters and truck drivers supporting the still Brazilian president blocked several roads in the country. The latest Federal Highway Police report, released around 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. in Lisbon), indicated that 306 roads had been cleared.
One of these blockages occurred on the road connecting Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, leading to the cancellation of several flights this Tuesday.
