The jackpot of PowerBall, the main American lottery, will reach 1,200 million dollars on Wednesday night, since no winners were found during the Halloween draw on Monday.
This is the fourth largest amount in the history of the United States. The record for the largest jackpot at stake was $1.586 billion, shared in 2016 between three winners based in California, Florida and Tennessee.
Jackpots have become increasingly common in recent years in the US lottery. Last August, Powerball officials increased the drawing from two to three a week, driving up ticket prices and boosting sales, NPR said.
One chance in 292.2 million
No one has matched all six numbers since August 3, which is 38 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner. In fact, the odds of hitting the jackpot are slim: one in 292.2 million.
Also, the lucky ones won’t necessarily get the $1.2 billion directly. In fact, the Powerball allows you to receive the full amount of the jackpot for 29 years, or receive a smaller amount but in a single payment. As of Wednesday night, that would be around $596 million, according to NPR.
