Unemployment in the eurozone falls to 6.6% in September year-on-year

The unemployment rate fell in September, compared to the same month of 2021, to 6.6% in the eurozone and to 6% in the European Union (EU), with Portugal in line with the EU average, with a decrease to 6.1%.

The data was published this Thursday by the EU statistics service, Eurostat, and indicates that, compared to the same month last year, the unemployment rate in the 19 member states of the single currency fell by 7.3%. to 6.6% in September. this year, the same is true for all 27 countries (from 6.7% to 6%).

In Portugal, there was a similar drop, with the unemployment rate falling from 6.3% in September 2021 to 6.1% in the same month this year.

In the variation of the chain, in relation to the previous month, in September the unemployment rate fell in the eurozone compared to 6.7% in August, while it remained stable in the EU.

In Portugal there was a slight monthly increase, given the percentage of 6% in August 2022 registered in the country (and 6.1% in September).

In absolute terms, Eurostat estimates that 12.9 million men and women in the EU, of which 10.9 million in the euro area, were unemployed in September 2022, a reduction of 52,000 in the 27 European countries and of 66,000 for the 19 EU member states. the single currency.

Compared to September 2021, unemployment fell this month by 1.3 million in the EU and by 1.1 million in the eurozone.

Regarding youth unemployment, a total of 2.7 million young people under the age of 25 were unemployed in the EU in September this year, of which 2.2 million in the euro zone, according to Eurostat.

The youth unemployment rate was therefore 14.6% in both the EU and the euro area, up from 14.3% and 14.4% in August, respectively, but down from 15. 4% (for both regions) in September 2021.

By gender, in the EU as a whole in September of this year the unemployment rate for women was 6.4% and that for men was 5.7%, both stable compared to August 2022.

In the euro zone, the unemployment rate for women was 7.1% and for men 6.2% in September, also stable compared to the previous month.
