Three people died and eight others were injured on Saturday, October 19, after a shooting that occurred in the state of Mississippi, in the southern United States, several American media, including CBS and CNN, report. The shooting involving at least two shooters took place near the town of Lexington, during a party organized after the victory of a local high school football team.
Interviewed by the Associated Press, Holmes County Sheriff Willie March explained that between 200 and 300 people were gathered on a trail a few hours after the encounter when a fight broke out between several young people for a still unknown reason. “To tell the truth, it was chaos. “The shooting started and people started running away,” the sheriff said.
A recent problem in Holmes County
Emergency services arrived at the scene around 00:30 local time (06:30 French time), less than 15 minutes after the shots were fired. Despite their quick intervention, two 19-year-old victims and a third 25-year-old died. The eight injured were taken by helicopter to hospital.
At the scene, police recovered shell casings to determine precisely how many different weapons were used.
According to Willie March, shootings between young men are a relatively new problem in Holmes County, which has a population of about 16,000, and are often the result of a simple “dispute” or argument.
A situation that leaves the sheriff speechless: “It’s difficult to understand the reasons why they fight. I don’t think they fight over territory or drugs,” he told the Associated Press. “I wish I had an answer.”
