An infection with the new clade 1b variant of mpox, previously called “monkeypox”, was detected for the first time in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute for Health Monitoring (RKI) announced on Tuesday, October 22.
“On October 18, 2024, an mpox infection with the new clade 1b, acquired abroad, was detected in Germany,” states the RKI, adding that “the risk to the health of the population in Germany” was “low.”
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads from animals to humans but also spreads between humans and causes fever, muscle pain and skin lesions. The resurgence of mpox on the African continent and the emergence of a new clade 1b variant pushed the WHO to activate its highest global alert level in mid-August.
