Israel arrests second group of people accused of spying for Iran

This news comes a day after a similar announcement by the police, who said on Monday that they had arrested seven Israelis also accused of spying for Iran.

“The Shin Bet [service israélien de la Sécurité intérieure] and the Central Investigation Unit of the Jerusalem District Police arrested seven residents of the Beit Safafa neighborhood in East Jerusalem, a sector of the Holy City occupied and annexed by Israel, the police said in a statement.

“These individuals, under Iranian direction, planned to assassinate a high-level Israeli scientist and the mayor of a major Israeli city,” the text adds.

A spy network?

On Monday, Israeli authorities arrested five adults and two minors. Suspected of working for the Iranian intelligence services, these seven people are accused of having collected “sensitive” information on military bases and energy sites.

How to explain the guardianThe dismantling of this network comes after the arrest in September of an Israeli businessman accused of spying for Tehran. He would have visited Iran twice to discuss the possibility of assassinating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Israel is currently embroiled in a multi-front conflict with Iranian-backed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza and the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Jewish state also pledged to respond to the missile attack launched by Tehran on October 1.

For its part, Iran presented this attack as a response to the assassination at the end of September of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli attack in Beirut and the assassination of Hamas leader Ismaïl Haniyeh in an explosion. in Tehran, attributed to Israel.
