War in Ukraine: Putin modifies a law to allow detainees to join the army

Implicitly, this relaxation of Russian law allows the Wagner mercenary group to recruit new soldiers directly from the penal colonies.

Recruitment outside of all military codes. As stated by the American media CNN, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, recently modified the Russian legislation on the convocation of reservists to allow men convicted of serious crimes, and who are no longer incarcerated, to join the army.

This includes people convicted of robbery, murder, drug trafficking or other serious crimes under Russian law. On the contrary, prisoners who have committed sexual crimes against minors or who have been imprisoned for treason, espionage or terrorism are excluded.

Wagner address?

As explained by the Belgian media free belgiumThis relaxation of Russian law removes a thorn from Putin’s side since until then the commutation of prison sentences in exchange for mercenary service was impossible.

However, since the start of the “special military operation” in Russia, Evgueni Prigokhine, the leader of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, would have personally participated in the recruitment of Russian detainees, as evidenced by several videos filmed in prisons. This change should allow you to legally continue recruiting him.

He explained to men between the ages of 22 and 50 that they could choose in five minutes to join the ranks of the army for six months, in exchange for their freedom. Several penal colonies would be concerned about this type of practice in Russia.

Last week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed that the partial mobilization of 300,000 men wanted by Vladimir Putin had ended. This recruitment among detainees could inflate these figures, while the situation of the Russian army in Ukraine is increasingly delicate.
