German Chancellor urges Russia to clearly reject nuclear weapons

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Russia to clearly rule out the use of nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.

“It is not allowed and it is not legitimate to use nuclear weapons in this conflict,” Scholz said in a Social Democratic Party (SPD) action this weekend.

“We call on Russia to declare that it will not do this. This is a border that cannot be crossed,” he added.

Scholz had already warned of the danger of nuclear escalation during a visit to China on Friday.

On the other hand, in the SPD’s initiative, there was a virtual intervention by the faction leader, Rolf Mutzenich, which caused controversy.

Mutzenich, who has repeatedly championed the search for a diplomatic solution in Ukraine, said it had led to the Ukrainian government’s inclusion on a “terrorist list”.

“I was annoyed that I was put on a list of terrorists by the Ukrainian government with the justification that I am advocating a ceasefire or a regional ceasefire so that diplomatic progress can be made,” Mutzenich said.

However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied that such a list exists.

“The Ukrainian government does not make lists of terrorists and, as far as I know, there is no case against Mr Mutzenich in Ukraine,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Oleh Nikolenko said via the social network Facebook.

The Center Against Disinformation of Ukraine’s Security and Defense Council published on the internet over the summer a list of 70 people, including Mutzenich, who accused it of spreading “stories” coinciding with Russian propaganda.

However, that list is no longer on the network.
