The COP27 Climate Summit was formally inaugurated this Sunday, in Egypt, with the election of the new president, Egyptian Minister Sameh Shukri, who promised that the meeting will be “a turning point in the realization of collective multilateral action.”

In front of the delegates of the more than 190 entities that are part of this meeting, promoted by the United Nations, to face the crisis caused by climate change, Shukri said that this meeting will not stop the efforts to obtain tangible results, because “it is time to go from the negotiation to the implementation of the commitments”, reported the EFE news agency.

The Egyptian diplomat insisted, in his opening speech, on the same issues that the organization has been claiming for several weeks: that the global climate situation requires “urgent international action” and that the current political and economic crisis should not “divert efforts global challenges”. to deal with climate change”.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister also stressed that this meeting will work hard to “provide the necessary financing to developing countries”, so that they can face their energy transition and alleviate the damage caused by the environmental situation.

In turn, in a brief opening speech, the outgoing president of COP26, the British Alok Sharma, stressed that in the year since the closing of the meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, there have been many “advances” in global management. of climate change, having been “historic and hopeful” steps that have been taken.

“To all climate change skeptics, my message is clear: as frustrating as it is, the action system [estabelecido pela COP] It’s working,” he said.

However, Alok Sharma added that “despite progress, the scale of the challenge is critical.”

“There is much to be done in this decade. We are on track to maintain the 1.5 degree Celsius warming limit, but we must be clear. As challenging as it is, inaction can only lead to climate catastrophe,” he warned.

Political decision-makers, academics and non-governmental organizations meet between November 6 and 18 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, at the 27th UN summit on climate change (COP27), to try to stop global warming, limiting the global warming at 2ºC (degrees centigrade), and if possible at 1.5ºC, above the average values ​​of the pre-industrial era.

Leaders such as the President of the United States, Joe Biden, have already confirmed that they will be present, and the Portuguese Government will be represented by the Prime Minister, António Costa.
