A French soldier was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday in Bucharest, Romania, where France is the host nation for a NATO mission, a police source told AFP.
His body was discovered by a maid and an investigation was opened, police said.
Local media, citing police sources, say the 41-year-old man was found with a chisel stuck in his neck and there was no evidence of a break-in.
French-led mission
The same sources indicate that he had registered with other French soldiers on Thursday at the hotel, where he would stay until January 3.
France is leading a mission in Romania launched in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the aim of strengthening NATO’s eastern flank defense over time.
The French soldiers are mainly deployed at the Cincu base in the center of the country, where French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited this week.
Contacted by AFP, staff were unable to comment on the information on Sunday.
