Chrysostomos II, leader of the Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church, dies at 81

The leader of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos II, has died at the age of 81, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (PYK, its acronym in Greek) reported on Monday.

According to the PYK, Chrysostomos II, suffering from a prolonged illness, spent his last days at the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus in the capital, Nicosia.

During his time at the head of the powerful Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, the archbishop won supporters and criticism for not limiting himself to religion, intervening regularly in political and economic matters on the Mediterranean island.

In 2013, then-Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris resigned after Chrysostomos II called for the resignation of Sarris and Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades, whom he blamed for the collapse of the country’s banking system.
