The French president assured this Monday, on the sidelines of COP27 in Egypt, that he wants to “pressurize” “rich non-European countries”, and in particular the United States, to pay their “share” to help the poorest in help face climate change.
“The US and China really need to get involved, because Europeans are ‘the ones who pay,'” Emmanuel Macron said during a youth exchange in Sharm el-Sheikh.
“We must therefore put pressure on non-European rich countries and tell them ‘you have to pay your share’,” he added.
The heads of state and government who will participate in COP27 began arriving today at the Egyptian city’s convention center where the largest global conclave to fight climate change is taking place.
The participants will be welcomed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and by the President of Egypt, Abdelfatah al Sisi.
Among the participants are the newly appointed Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, the conservative Rishi Sunak and of Italy Giorgia Meloni.
Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, today begins his participation in the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27), attending the launch of the new movement called the International Alliance for Drought Resilience (IDRA).
Political decision-makers, academics and non-governmental organizations will meet until the 18th in Sharm el-Sheikh, at the 27th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) with the aim of trying to stop global warming, earth to 2ºC (degrees Celsius), and if possible at 1.5ºC, above the average values of the pre-industrial period.
