The leader of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostom II, has died at the age of 81, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (PYK, its acronym in Greek) reported Monday.
According to the PYK, Chrysostom II, who suffered from a long illness, spent the past few days at the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus in the capital Nicosia.
During his time as head of the powerful Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus, the archbishop gained supporters and critics for not being limited to religion, regularly intervening in matters of the Mediterranean island’s politics and economy.
In 2013, Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris resigned after Chrysostom II called for the resignation of Sarris and central bank governor Panicos Demetriades, whom he held responsible for the collapse of the country’s banking system.
