Eleven people died in Peru when a bus carrying schoolchildren, their families and teachers fell off a cliff after colliding with a van, local authorities announced this Sunday, November 24. According to authorities, 18 people were injured.
According to the Andina news agency, 57 people were traveling on the bus.
“We have 11 dead in the accident. Among them are five 17-year-old schoolchildren and a two-year-old child,” said Jorge Sánchez, an official in the San Martín region.
The group was on a school trip from the northern city of Piura to the Amazonian department of San Martín.
Peru registers a high number of bus accidents, with 3,138 deaths in 2023, according to the Ministry of Transportation.
