Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would present a ceasefire agreement with Lebanese Hezbollah to his security cabinet this Tuesday night, November 26. This agreement should end more than a year of cross-border hostilities and two months of open war in Lebanon.
“I would propose this afternoon to the Cabinet to authorize a ceasefire in Lebanon,” he told the press.
He also assured that the IDF “will respond” if the pro-Iran movement violates the truce and that the IDF will retain “complete” freedom of action in Lebanon. Benjamin Netanyahu said this truce will allow Israel to “focus on the Iranian threat.”
Massive Israeli raids in Beirut this Tuesday
This announcement comes as Israel increased airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs and the center of the Lebanese capital on Tuesday, killing at least ten people.
Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent days in favor of a ceasefire in Lebanon. The G7 diplomats today expressed their support for “an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah”, stating that “it is time to reach a diplomatic solution.”
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 3,754 people have been killed in the country since October 2023, the majority since September of this year.
A ceasefire should also help end the conflict in Gaza, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said before the deal was announced. Benjamin Netanyahu also stated during his speech that Israel will “intensify” its pressure on Hamas.
