An explosion in a factory near Alicante, in the southeast of Spain, left three dead and seven injured this Wednesday, November 27, the region’s emergency services announced.
The events took place in an industrial area of Ibi, about forty kilometers from the center of Alicante, in a factory producing expanded polystyrene. The alert was given shortly before noon.
“Three people died and seven were injured” in the “explosion” of a factory, the emergency services of the Valencian Community, where Alicante is located, said early in the afternoon.
An explosion followed by a fire.
“It is not a fire, but an explosion,” firefighters told AFP, raising the possibility that it was the industrial building’s boiler that exploded.
“After this explosion, part of the industrial building collapsed, the roof fell and approximately half of the surface of the building collapsed, which means that some interior walls also collapsed,” adds the same source.
In statements to the deputies, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, expressed “the full support of the Spanish Government” to the victims of the accident, as well as to the firefighters and first responders working at the scene.
At the beginning of the afternoon rescue operations were still underway.
