They used to celebrate it on January 7, the date of Jesus’ birth according to the Gregorian calendar. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has taken the symbolic step of allowing Ukrainians to celebrate Christmas on December 25.
A decision made so that the Ukrainian faithful may have the possibility not to celebrate this religious holiday at the same time as the Russian Orthodox, reports the guardian.
It is not the same date as in Russia
And for good reason, Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who has repeatedly spoken out in favor of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. The religious representative also assured that the Russian soldiers killed during the war in Ukraine would be washed of all their sins.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church also specifies that this possibility offered to the Ukrainian faithful applies to all 7,000 parishes in the country. Therefore, each of them can organize a religious service on December 25.
