More than 40 million Americans had already voted early in the midterm elections on Monday, surpassing the level of the 2018 midterm elections, according to the US Elections Project.
During this election, organized on Tuesday, the country is called to renew the entire House of Representatives and a third of the Senate. A whole series of local elective positions, in particular governors or prosecutors, is also at stake.
This year, more than 18 million Americans voted early in person. 22 million people returned a postal ballot, a total of more than 40 million votes. At the same time, in 2018, 39.1 million people had voted in the “intermediate tests”.
Lots of Republican calls
Republicans, however, have filed appeals on highly technical points to try to invalidate some early votes in key states where results could be tight.
In Pennsylvania, the State Supreme Court agreed with the Republicans, ruling that these ballots could not be counted if they were incorrectly dated. Thousands of voices could be affected.
In Wisconsin, Republicans have gotten certain mail-in votes thrown out if the address of the witness, who must be present during the proceedings, is not complete. There are also ongoing lawsuits in Michigan to disqualify certain votes cast without identification.
Last week, former President Donald Trump told him he had spotted the first signs of mail-in voting fraud in Pennsylvania, a key state in the midterm elections. The charge was immediately dismissed by that state’s election officials.
In 2020, Donald Trump had already accused, without evidence, the authorities of several states of having stolen the presidential elections by rigging the vote by mail. Millions of Americans still believe in this theory.
