Bashar Al-Assad’s presidential palace was left upside down. The Syrian dictator, overthrown by a lightning offensive by a coalition led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has fled Syria, leaving his luxurious residence at the mercy of an exultant people.
The residence, located on a hill overlooking Damascus and made up of three buildings with six floors each, was looted and looted this Sunday, December 8, after the capture of the capital. Dozens of Syrians set foot on the grounds of the palace located in the exclusive district of Malki to immortalize the fall of the hated Syrian president. And he took the opportunity to acquire numerous properties.
In the images we can see men, women and children moving through the rooms and stairs of the residence of the former head of state, whose enormous rooms have been emptied and where documents have been scattered.
The furniture is overturned. A painting depicting Assad is thrown to the ground at the ground floor entrance.
“He lived in luxury while we suffered”
A video on social media shows a crowd in the bedrooms, stealing clothes and personal belongings, luxury brand bags, including Louis Vuitton, and even televisions. Visitors compare the residence to “a museum.”
The reception room where the Head of State received visitors was set on fire. The huge room was completely burned.
Oum Nader, a 35-year-old woman who traveled from a neighboring neighborhood, said she realized “what (they) were forbidden to see” while living “in poverty and deprivation.” “Even when they are gone, we still have water and heat, while our children get sick from the cold,” he says.
As for Abou Omar, who refuses to give his last name, he explains that he came “in search of revenge” because Bashar Al-Assad “oppressed them in an incredible way.”
“I take photos because I am very happy to find myself in the heart of your house,” he adds.
“God was generous and allowed us this moment that we had been waiting for since the 70s,” says Omar, another visitor to the residence, 25 years old. “He lived in luxury while we suffered.”
