NATO warns Kosovo Force is “vigilant and ready to intervene”

NATO Undersecretary General Mircea Geoana said on Sunday that the Kosovo Force (KFOR), led by the organization, is “vigilant and ready to intervene” if stability in the country is threatened.

“NATO’s KFOR remains vigilant and stands ready to intervene if stability is threatened,” he warned in a tweet.

The former Romanian foreign minister also said he spoke to Miroslav Lajcák, the European Union (EU) Special Representative for Serbia-Kosovo dialogue, “about the tense situation in northern Kosovo”.

“Both Belgrade and Pristina must exercise restraint and avoid escalation” [das tensões]Geoana warned.

A demonstration took place this Sunday in Mitrovica, the main Serbian-majority city in northern Kosovo, where banners were carried, according to Europa Press, with phrases such as “we only have one country, Serbia” or “enough of Curti’s terror”. referring to Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

On Saturday, Kosovar Serbs resigned en bloc from their positions as MPs, mayors and officials of all kinds, in a coordinated protest initiative, to express their rejection of the imposition of Kosovar registrations on vehicles owned by Serbs in northern Kosovo.

Kosovo Serbs, in the country’s four Serb-majority municipalities, believe Kosovo authorities have violated agreements with Serbia and the European Union.
