This is the first ceasefire since early November 2023. A truce between the different parties then came into effect for a week, allowing the release of several Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
“We have an agreement on the hostages in the Middle East. They will be released shortly, thank you!” greeted the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, in a message on social networks.
Until then, Hamas and Israel accused each other of blocking any agreement, with each side rejecting the other’s conditions for a ceasefire in the war triggered on October 7, 2023 by an attack by the Islamist movement against Israel.
This Monday, January 13, Joe Biden stated that a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas was “about” to be concluded. The US president affirmed that his administration is working “urgently to conclude this agreement”, a few days before Donald Trump comes to power.
At least 46,707 people, mostly civilians, have been killed by Israel in Gaza, according to data from the Hamas government’s Ministry of Health, considered reliable by the UN.
