Midterms in the United States: Where are the results of the elections to Congress?

Although the polls announced a big Republican victory in the midterm elections, the first results show a less clear trend. The suspense remains in the Senate, where three states will determine which will be the majority.

24 hours after the announcement of the first results of the midterm elections, the United States still has doubts about the political color of its two chambers. However, Joe Biden has managed to limit the damage for Democrats, according to early trends.

Americans are still awaiting the final results of Thursday’s midterm elections. Although the polls predicted a great Republican victory, the counts already carried out show a smaller wave than expected.

Joe Biden congratulated himself on Wednesday for having counteracted the Republican “giant wave” during this traditionally dangerous election for the current power, while Donald Trump acknowledged “somewhat disappointing” results.

Slight Republican advance for the lower house

In the House of Representatives, Republicans are currently in the lead, but not as much as expected. Donald Trump’s party won 205 seats, to 183 for the Democrats.

Thus, the “Great Old Party” has so far managed to reverse the trend, while the Democrats have so far held a slim majority in the lower house.

Despite their initial advantage, the Republicans are still waiting for an absolute majority of 218 seats. It would allow Donald Trump’s party to have control of the Lower House, but it would only sign a partial victory for the former occupant of the White House, who does not hide his ambitions for 2024.

3 States pending in the Senate

In the Senate, the battle is particularly tough. Each party currently has 48 seats. Now there are only 3 senators left to elect to decide between the two parties and tilt the upper house to one side or the other: Arizona, Nevada and Georgia.

In Arizona, the race is between former Fox News anchor Kari Lake and Democrat Katie Hobbs. If the Trump candidate is the favourite, Joe Biden’s party has not said the last word about him.

In Nevada, a state historically accustomed to swinging from left to right in polls, polls predicted a close matchup. And the first results of the count confirm it. The vote count could take several more days to decide between incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, given her succession favorite, and her Republican rival Adam Laxalt.

Everything could finally be played out in Georgia, while Pastor Raphael Warnock, outgoing senator and former football star Herschel Walker, also did not exceed the 50% mark of the vote. A new election is already scheduled for December 6. It could give one side or the other the upper hand and determine policy for years to come.
