Democrats win seat in New Mexico House of Representatives

Democrats won a Republican-held seat in the US state of New Mexico House of Representatives, with Republican incumbent Congresswoman Yvette Herrell admitting defeat to Democrat Gabe Vasquez.

While congratulating Vasquez, Herrell on Wednesday criticized changes made by Democratic state lawmakers to the administrative boundaries of the New Mexico (southwestern) district for which he is running, which he said had stripped rural communities of their voices.

In the northeastern state of Connecticut, Democrat Jahana Hayes won re-election to a third term in the House of Representatives, beating competition from former Republican state senator George Logan.

Republicans lead the conquest of seats in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the US parliament, with 207 seats, compared to the 184 congressmen secured by Democrats, according to the most recent projections of the Associated Press (AP) of midterm. elections.

To achieve a majority in the House of Representatives, either party must win at least 218 seats.

In the Senate, the upper house of the US parliament, Republicans have 49 seats, one more than Democrats, with four seats still up for grabs, one of which, in Alaska, stands no chance for Democrats.

The states of Nevada and Arizona are open, while in Georgia elections will be held again in December to nominate a senator for Congress, after none of the candidates has reached 50%, reported the US press, in a place that could be decisive in determining the majority in the upper house of Congress.

To retain control of the Senate, Democrats will have to win at least two of these three contests, taking 50 of 100 seats, the same as they had before this election.
